Sociecity Youth on Assignment is a pilot program created by high school photography teacher Mary Cheung and myself where we work with high school aged students to create articles that bring to light opinions on real world social issues affecting them.
Our first program was carried out in 2013 with the students of Gunderson High School in San Jose, California. Over the course of two months, students develop their skills in photography and writing to tackle issues ranging from Islamaphobia to Youth Violence and everything in between.
The results were amazing, and we were able to give students a voice, to gently guide them, and to watch as their work and insights came to life on the Sociecity website.
